台灣作家楊双子的小說贏得國際布克獎
Taiwan Writer Wins the International Booker Prize
Taiwan just made history (創造了歷史) in the world of books.
A novel called "Taiwan Travelogue" has won the 2026 International Booker
Prize.
一本叫做《臺灣漫遊錄》的小說贏得了2026年的國際布克獎。
This is the first time a Taiwanese work has ever won this award.
The book was written by Taiwanese author Yang Shuang-zi (台灣作家楊双子).
It was translated (翻譯) into English by Lin King (金翎).
The prize was announced in London (倫敦).
Yang and King will share the prize money (獎金) of 50,000 British pounds (五萬英鎊).
That is more than 2 million NT!
So, what is the book about?
"Taiwan Travelogue" is a historical story (歷史故事).
It is set in 1938, during a time when Japan ruled (統治) Taiwan.
The story follows two women: one Taiwanese and one Japanese.
They travel across Taiwan together by train and enjoy local food.
Through their journey, the story explores friendship, identity (身份), and
culture.
The book was first published (出版) in 2020.
This is not its first big award.
In 2024, Lin King's English translation won the US National Book Award for
Translated Literature.
2024年,金翎的英文譯本贏得了美國國家圖書獎翻譯文學獎。
That was also a first for Taiwanese literature (台灣文學).
The novel is now being translated into more than 20 languages.
These include Japanese, Korean, German (德文), and Dutch (荷蘭文).
This win puts Taiwan on the world literary map.
這次獲獎讓台灣在世界文學地圖上留下了印記。

超級聖嬰現象即將來襲
A "Super" El Nino May Be Coming
Have you ever heard of El Nino (聖嬰現象)?
El Nino is a natural event (自然現象) that happens in the Pacific Ocean (太平洋).
During El Nino, the ocean water gets warmer than usual (比平常更溫暖).
When the ocean gets warmer, the weather all over the world can change.
Some places get more rain.
Other places get less rain and become very dry.
Now, scientists are warning (警告) about a very strong El Nino.
Some people are calling it a "super" El Nino (超級聖嬰).
Researchers in the United States say there is a 65 percent chance it will
arrive by October.
美國的研究人員說,它有65%的機率會在十月到來。
They expect it to last (會持續) until February 2027.
If this happens, it could be one of the strongest El Ninos in all of recorded
history.
它可能是有記錄以來最強烈的聖嬰現象之一。
Scientists say a super El Nino can cause big problems.
Crops may not grow well because of drought or flooding.
農作物可能因為乾旱或洪水而生長不良。
When crops fail (歉收), food prices go up.
That makes life harder for many families around the world.
A very strong El Nino in 1997 and 1998 cost the world between 32 and 96
billion US dollars (損失了320億到960億美元).
Scientists are watching the ocean very closely right now.
The next big forecast report comes out on June 11th.

NEWS FLASH
In today’s News Flash, our word is “identity”
"Identity" is a noun.
It means who you are -- your background, your culture, and what makes you
special.
For example, your language, your family, and your hometown are all part of
your identity.
In the story "Taiwan Travelogue," the two women come from different places.
They have different identities.
But they still become friends and learn from each other.
Identity can also describe a group, like a country or a culture.
For example: "Taiwan has a strong cultural identity."
The adjective form is "identical,” meaning exactly the same.
And the verb form is "identify,” meaning to recognize or name something.
